About
Definite Article brings together four contemporary british artists who are concerned with the relationship between surface structure and three-dimensional form or 'objectness'.Each of the four participating artists injects dynamism into their work through the interaction of surface and the object, and of the object with its surrounding space. 'One of the most exciting things about surface making is the extraordinary tension which can be created between the surface and the object of which it is a surface.' Eric Butcher.
Each piece, every facet, is to be considered as part of a greater whole. The processes and ideas implicit in the finished work are as disparate and as varied as the artists's techniques that brought them about. But ultimately, they all encourage the observer to engage physicaly with the work and its modifying effect on the space it occupies
