In his third exhibition at the gallery, Damian Loeb will present a new series of paintings of outer space created by photographing the night sky from his Manhattan rooftop.
About
Taking its name from the astronomical abbreviation for the black hole of Sagittarius, the exhibition is inspired by low-fi early NASA photography,2001: A Space Odyssey, and the sketches made by the earliest astronomers. The eleven works are all 3 x 3 feet or 6 x 6 feet in dimension and depict celestial bodies ranging from galaxies to the surface of the moon. “I love the idea that you can see all these things by looking up. There is no point in trying to paint a perfect reproduction of space. I am trying to create paintings that allow me to feel the way I did when I first see the subject through the lens.”
