Cunae: A Lecture on Nesting

About

Artist Andy Holden and his father, ornithologist Peter Holden, present a performative lecture on the ingenuity and diversity of nest building. Including field recordings, film archives and museum collections, this special one-night event is a collaboration between art and science, father and son.

Titled Cunae (Latin for nest or cradle), this lecture draws upon an ongoing body of research by the Holdens who are united in their shared enthusiasm for the natural world. This materialises as a fascinating and informative journey through a complex world of construction, wisdom and care.

Andy Holden’s Cunae: A Lecture on Nesting is commissioned by Spike Island and Artangel with the support of Bristol 2015 European Green Capital. This is the first phase of the commission; the next phase will be presented by Artangel in 2016.

Andy Holden (b.1982, Bedford, UK) lives and works in Bedford, UK.  His most recent solo exhibitions include Towards a Unified Theory of MI!MS, Zabludowicz Collection, London (2013) and Spike Island (2014), Chewy Cosmos Thingly Time at Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge (2011), Art Now: Andy Holden, Tate Britain (2010). Group exhibitions include Art Now Live, Tate Britain (2011) and The Universal Addressability of Dumb Things (Curated by Mark Leckey), Hayward Touring, 2013. In 2010 he curated Be Glad For the Song Has No End at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge, and in 2012 he adapted David Foster Wallace’s Brief Interviews with Hideous Men for the stage at the ICA in London. He co-runs the record label Lost Toys Records, as well as performing regularly and releasing records with his band The Grubby Mitts.
