About

The Idea

‘Crunch!’ - the word is the sound that happens when things are pushed or come together, with energy. It is an unpredictable sound, not defined, with no form but yet, instantly recognisable and very clear in the heads of most. We know what it is, and it is also ambiguous.

It is an experiment, and has its roots in chaotic growth. Experimental in the sense that the conditions are being created for the experiment to occur. And chaotic growth to mean it is allowed to develop as it will, without strict order imposed.

The Show

Crunch will be a group show very much focused on the idea of dialogue in and between artwork and artists. As well as a curated group of artists (from across the UK), the doors will be open to anyone to contribute over the week - the idea is to create a fluent, ambiguous space of growth and inclusivity. The brief is open with the only proviso being that the artworks will need to be able to fit in the space, unless they are intended to go outside. There is no expectation for the contributors to be ‘artists’ but rather all are welcome.

In addition, the event will be joined by two groups of performance, one of 'fine art' and the other of spoken word/poetry. This will include Multipolyscriptoscribble - a nomadic event with its roots in community and inclusivity.

The Rules

The only rules are that the work has to be able to come through the door, unless it is intended for outside, and that it should not interfere with the work of other artists, unless previously agreed.
This also applies to the performance events, with reasonable limits on timing (usually 5-10 minutes) and the rule as with physical artwork that it should not interfere with the work of other artists, unless previously agreed.

Entry to the event is free. The main event will be March 25th, open 1-6pm,  with performances from 6-9pm. Exhibition will continue Sunday March 26th. access for other days will be by appointment.

The Venue

Electro Studios Project Space is an independent space for curated projects in St. Leonards-on-Sea. We provide an opportunity for artists and curators to propose exhibitions and projects, ESPS is about testing ideas through collaboration, and the juxtaposition of art works and events. Without prejudice, agenda, house style or party line, ESPS supports artists, and encourages disparate artistic voices and is a place for debate and dialogue between curators and the audience.
