About

Join us for a conversation with specialists on the global phenomenon of 'the biennial' and its impact on the forms and production, presentation and consumption of contemporary visual culture. This informal but expert discussion forms part of a new strand of our programming called Conversations on Contemporary Art, which looks at important features in the contemporary visual arts ecology internationally. The panel will comprise Nicolas Garait, curator at large of the Lyon Biennial since 2003, Andrea Schlieker, curator and writer and former Director of the Folkestone Triennial and Fatos Ustek, independent curator and art critic. The discussion will be led by Paul Hobson, Contemporary Art Society Director. In recent decades, biennials, triennials and other cyclical contemporary art exhibitions have expanded exponentially. Is the biennial a legitimate critical platform? How are these types of events shaping the type of work being created by artists today and the way contemporary art is being experienced? Who are they for and whom do they exclude? Join us for an evening discussion about the impact of this form of large-scale international exhibition on both the global art world map and local contemporary visual arts ecologies with an expert guest panel.
