AboutIn conjunction with Contemporary Photography NOW, at 6pm on Tuesday 6th August, Nottingham-based photographer & artist David Severn will be leading a talk and critique evening for photographers and creatives working with photography. This is an opportunity for those with an interest in photography to get together, meet like-minded people and participate in a critical discussion in a relaxed and enthusiastic atmosphere. Surface Gallery is delighted to be hosting the evening, and will welcome all participants with nibbles and drinks to keep you all going throughout the evening!
David Severn is a young social documentary photographer from Nottingham whose work is based on the relationship between people and place: how communities, most particularly the working class, interact and are affected by the environment they're living in. David was the grand prize winner and Rufford Gallery prize winner at the Nottingham Open 2012. He was a finalist in the Magnum Photos Photographic Award in 2012, and exhibits regularly all across the UK, most recently at FORMAT International Photography Festival in Derby. David is currently working on a project looking at the British travelling showmen community, culminating in an exhibition on the Forest Recreation Ground during Goose Fair in October.
Both David and the volunteers at Surface Gallery warmly invite photographers, artists, and those with some prior experience of photography, to join us from 6 8pm on August 6th. The workshop will begin with a private viewing of Surface Gallery's current exhibition Contemporary Photography NOW, with an opportunity to share your ideas and critiques of the work on display. You are invited to bring personal work you are interested in discussing with the group or use the laptop available to show images online. David will then lead an interactive group chat exploring online photography resources, where you will have the chance to suggest favourite bodies of work to share with the group or projects / multimedia you've been recently looking at. There will also be photobooks from David's personal collection available for you to pore over. The evening will finish in a walk around the corner to a cosy local pub, where you will be able to continue socializing over a drink.
Price: £3, or £2 concessions (students, those in receipt of benefits, over 60s). This fee is to cover the costs of the workshop, and is payable on the evening. No need to book in advance just turn up!
