To accompany the exhibition Brion Gysin: Unseen Collaborator, author and curator Mike Jay explores the sources of Gysin's fascination with the Assassin myths and their connection with hashish: weaving together the legends of Marco Polo, the true history of the original Assassin sect, the first Europeans to discover hashish and the literary drug culture of 19th century Paris.
"But, Hamid', I laughed, 'am not an Assassin at all'
'We are Assassins, all of us', he gravely replied"
