Circle + Circumference an installation by Jake Lever

About

Centre + Circumference links a number of individual prints together to create three giant, gilded icons. Like huge pages from an obscure manuscript they hang from scaffolding bars, glinting in the candlelight in this 18c Church. One piece is so dark that it takes a while to discern the image; a huge hand pointing downwards, the lines of growth radiating out from a still point, hundreds of years held in one palm. Another shines confidently upwards, the distance from the base of the palm to the tips of the fingers a monumental three metres. The third is orientated east to west, two hands bruised and battered by life's journey, yet quietly offering wafer thin fragments of gold. An important part of Centre + Circumference is the music of Sir John Tavener's Prayer of the Heart. This haunting piece was based around what is known as the Jesus Prayer, written for the 'untamed' voice of Björk, who sings in English, Coptic and Greek, accompanied by the Brodsky Quartet.
