SomoS Art House presents the performance “Transbiology” by Teo Vlad in the second installment of the Cinema Conversación program. Come to see a personal reflection on the polemics of gender identity_ies in a unique mix of film, contemporary dance, and performance.

About

Cinema Conversación

Cinema Conversación aims to bring the audience in direct dialogue with artists and filmmakers, thus creating a platform where thoughts and experiences can be shared freely and where the usual separation between spectator and artist is lifted. The program series deliberately focuses on LGBTQ* experiences and would like to facilitate an ongoing discussion about feelings, desires, issues, goals, and social, political, and artistic positions of LGBTQ* individuals and communities. Besides the thematic focus, Cinema Conversación is also a platform to challenge and question the rigid boundaries of film and cinema, to expand on the idea of what the cinematic arts could mean, and to experiment with the wide range of genres and artistic practices involved in moving image-based productions.

Transbiology

This (approximately) 30 minutes long solo performance aims to demonstrate personal experiences of being trapped in a body that doesn’t belong to its owner. Lost between two genders a morph-alien appears, who desperately struggles to find acceptance amongst others, only to realize that their true power comes from within. Transbiology is a personal story of alienaton and struggle due to not fitting binary gender norms. It utilizes various artforms, including film, theatre, butoh, and contemporary dance.

The overall aesthetic of this solo performance is imitating a Silent Movie and using Shadowplay instead of backdrop projections. The idea of “Transbiology” is inspired by Beckett’s film ‘FILM’ – a self-observation of self from all angles, including the perspective of the audience, thus attempting to break the 4th wall of film and theatre.

About Teo Vlad

Teo Vlad studied film in Scotland. Their first works already experimented with mixing film and performance. Teo’s work reflects on the unseen and the untold and is motivated by the need to break out of the frame and to look outside of the box. Moving to Berlin inspired them to experiment with space and stage and how film/image can be used creatively in performance.

Cinema Conversación LGBTQ* is powered by SomoS Art House and is curated by Zsombor Bobák.
