About

SomoS proudly presents the solo exhibition "Encoded, Stored, and Retrieved" by Christie MacDonald in which the French Berlin-based painter and print-maker processes memory, cultural pollination and artistic invention, bridging the classic technique of painting with impulses from the digital realm.

The visual diary that the artist kept during her recent journeys around South-east Asia, documenting colors, composition or random details, served her in creating a coherent and impressive new body of work during her time as Artist-in-Residence at SomoS in Berlin.

Memory, personal and sourced images, set and setting play an important role in MacDonald’s work. She works in the abstract. Post-pop, digital and internet culture, fine art, and the similarities and disparities between these themes play an important role in her art. Citing Matisse as an influence, MacDonald’s work approaches the deceptive lightness of his painting, his brilliant use of color and ornamental shapes, while adding an intriguing contemporary sense of pictorial space that may be influenced by the workspace of creative computer applications. Warped, skewed, stretched, and layered, the dynamic elements in MacDonald’s paintings seem caught in a moment of perfect temporary compositional balance, before potentially dissolving or reconfiguring their alignment again.

As MacDonald states about the process of memory and retrieval, “My paintings are the result of the absorption of images that I collect on my trips or in my everyday life. Through the process of dreams and memories, I reinterpret them in a new composition. My practice is shared between digital and actual painting process. The pictures are stored on my computer in order to digitally transform them. Like a collage, I mix images together allowing me to build a new narrative and paint this new image onto the canvas. Driven by emotion and intuition, and using a rough aesthetic and bold palette, I am looking for the right balance between colors and forms.”

"Encoded, Stored, and Retrieved" offers a unique glimpse into a very contemporary and personal interpretation of painting, connecting the past with the future.
