About
Semblance is an exhibition of newly commissioned artwork created by Cherelle Sappleton for the National Trust’s Sutton House property located in Hackney. Using photographs donated to her by women of colour based in or having a relationship to Hackney, she has created a new body of work that responds to ideas relating to British Afro-Caribbean diasporic identities, personal archives and aspects of Sutton House’s dynamic history.
Sappleton’s artistic practice centres on photographic media with an interest in abstraction, surrealist aesthetics, pop culture and music. Blending these elements together, the work she makes uses the black female body as a starting point to explore and respond to issues of representation, agency and the materiality of photographic images.
