On Saturday 10 June 2017 curator and artist Jim Threapleton will be in conversation with artists Mike Ballard, Teresita Dennis, Philip Gurrey, Claude Temin-Vergez, and Sarah Shaw to discuss the materiality of gesture in contemporary painting.
‘Ceremony’ brings together a group of artists fascinated by how paint moves — both in terms of its physical properties and its psychological impact. At the heart of this exhibition of contemporary abstraction is a sense of painterly gesture. While using a variety of visual styles, the artists share expressionist tendencies and a common language of chance, improvisation, and surface texture.
