David Richard Gallery is pleased to debut new circular paintings of optically active compositions by Carl Anderson in his first solo exhibition with the gallery, Eye of the Storm: Circulos Vibrante. Anderson was born and pursued his early art studies in his homeland of Guyana. His talent and diverse studio practice provides him the opportunity to create not only geometric, color-based, and optical abstractions, but also photoreal portraits and figurative scenes. This newest body of work focuses on the former aesthetic and the presentation includes 10 circular paintings created in 2022 and 2023 in a variety of sizes from 21 inches and up to 43 inches in diameter.

A continuation of the artist’s earlier Spaceship Series with its initial futuristic look at space and astral travels, the newest tondos are eye-popping compositions inspired by Op Art from the 1960s and 70s and the icons such as Bridget Riley, Richard Anuszkiewicz, Julian Stanczak, and Ernst Benkert. Anderson has combined his take on the use of swirling lines, hard edge geometric shapes, radiating lines, patterns, rectilinear and curvilinear forms combined with high contrast and high-keyed color combinations, including fluorescent and glow in the dark pigments that make the compositions pulse and vibrate, creating illusions of dimensional space and spinning motion. These paintings, with their various pigments challenge the viewer’s visual perception and are optically active in natural light or under black light with an added benefit of an afterglow when the lights are switched off.

About Carl Anderson:

Carl Anderson was given special permission to enter the ‘Burrowes School of Art’, Guyana’s sole professional school of the arts, at the young age of fourteen. But hungry for better technical knowledge and a nurturing creative environment, he decided to leave Guyana to learn what he could from the world. Still a teen, he moved to Venezuela for thirteen years, where he could be closer to the international Latin American art milieu; this included artists such as Rafael Soto and others. Thus, he became one of the very rare creatives from English-speaking Guyana, to explore nearby Latin America rather than Great Britain or North America, as a source of inspiration and professional development. Venturing further afield, Anderson went on to win first prize for painting in the 4th Edition of the International Art Biennial of Malta. This was followed with a second prize for painting and a Diploma di merito at the International ‘Grolla d’Oro’ in Italy. A solo exhibition of his paintings, “Carl Anderson: Recent Work” was on view at NYC’s Port Authority through October 2017. The artist’s paintings have been featured in numerous shows abroad—including the USA. His work was part of 2016’s BRIC House Arts and Media invitational in Brooklyn.  A random listing of other shows over the years include: The Foreign Press Association, London, UK; National Museum of Modern Art, Cairo, Egypt; New Jersey Center for the Arts, NJ; OAS Art Museum, Washington DC; Galerie Du Nid D’Aigle Profundeville, Belgium; Omaggio alle Biennale di Malta, Castello Caldora, Vasto, Italy; 3rd Bienal de Pintura del Caribe y Centroamerica, Museo de Arte Moderno, Santo Domingo, DR., plus many others.[1]

About David Richard Gallery:

In 2015 David Richard Gallery launched DR Art Projects to provide a platform for artists of all stripes—international, national, local, emerging and established—to present special solo projects or to participate in unique collaborations or thematic exhibitions. The goal is to offer a fresh look at contemporary art practice from a broad spectrum of artists and presentations. The Gallery opened its current location in New York in 2017.

Since its inception in 2010, David Richard Gallery has produced museum quality exhibitions that feature Post War abstraction in the US. The presentations have addressed specific decades and geographies as well as certain movements and tendencies. While the gallery has long been recognized as an important proponent of post-1960s abstraction—including both the influential pioneers as well as a younger generation of practitioners in this field—in keeping with this spirit of nurture and development the gallery also presents established artists who embrace more gestural and representational approaches to the making of art as well as young emerging artists.
