Playworks is delighted to announce that Stephen Mallinder, founding member of Cabaret Voltaire and one of electronic music’s most influential pioneers, will be joining us for Campfire on Thursday 17th. The iconic synth-head from Sheffield will be sharing his lightning wit and recalling life at the eye of the post-punk storm.
About
Stephen Mallinder, affectionately known as ‘Mal’, is widely known and respected as lead singer and bassist of Sheffield’s industrial/dance figureheads, Cabaret Voltaire, even almost two decades after the band’s dissolution. Still vigorously active, there’s clearly still plenty left in the tank: initially relocating to Perth, he helmed the Offworlds Sounds label alongside Shane ‘Soundlab’ Norton. Alongside this foray into the business-side of the music industry, he also released more breaks/electro-orientated music as both Ku-Ling Bros and Sassi & Loco.
With just as much energy as the Energiser Bunny, it’s no wonder that Mal’s still in and out of the studio. He recently recorded a debut album with Steve Cobby – one half of Fila Brazillia – as Hey, Rube!, and is currently collaborating with analogue gear wizard Benge and Tunng’s Phil Winter as Wrangler. While the music is always fresh and innovative, Stephen’s distinctive lead vocals, lyrical phrasing and stripped-down rhythms occasionally hint at Cabaret Voltaire’s ‘Microphonies’ period.
