About

Brooks + Scarpa | DENSE-CITY: Housing for Quality of Life and Social Capital
Panel |  Learning from Los Angeles: Innovative Housing Design
Tuesday, November 12 | 6-8 PM
Airport Gallery (Airport Campus) | 3026 Airport Avenue

Today, there is a growing interest amongst architects that have spawned new and innovative approaches to housing that are well-designed and incorporate a combination of creative social programming, cutting-edge forms and materials, sustainable design and a keen sense of aesthetic. For decades Los Angeles has been perceived as a sprawling metropolis, designed with an eye to quantity, not quality housing. Today, good design is a cornerstone of thriving homes and communities of all incomes and backgrounds. Mike Alvidrez, Executive Director for Skid Row Housing Trust says. “Good design actually has therapeutic value.” This seminar will explore, show examples, and discuss how new sustainable models and current trends in affordable, low-income and market-rate income housing design have produced innovative and cutting edge designs that have improved our cities and urban environments. The seminar will also demonstrate how hi-design affordable housing architecture can help create more equitable societies and better cities.
