Devon-based artist, Susan Michie is bringing her unique work to London’s Hospital Club in her first-ever solo show. The Drift of Hours, an exhibition of her drawings and photographs, is open to members and non-members for the duration of the show.

About

With a meditative and enduring quality to them, her affordable, collectable drawings contain key themes of precision, delicacy and patience. There’s a mystique to Michie’s work and although distinctly feminine, the drawings – created in pencil, pen and ink – appeal to both male and female collectors who appreciate the monochrome, intense and repetitive simplicity of her pared-back images.

Michie grew up in a family of artists. Her grandmother was Anne Redpath – who was made the first female Academician at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1952 – and her father was Alastair Michie, both celebrated artists who were known for their strong use of colour.

After exhibiting with the Brody House Group at ArtMarket Budapest in 2013 and selling pieces to European collectors, Michie was introduced to Anna Grundberg, director of art consultancy Sanne Grundberg Ltd and one of the art curators at the Budapest-based member’s club, hotel, performance space and creative hub, Brody House (winner of Mr and Mrs Smith’s Best Boutique Hotel in 2013).

This led to Michie being introduced to Ali Hillman, curator at The Hospital Club in Covent Garden. Hillman instantly connected with Michie’s work, believing it would be of interest to club members and the general public, and offered her an exhibition.

Susan is delighted to be showing her work at The Hospital Club, a stimulating and creative environment in the cultural heart of London. “This is a wonderful chance to show my work; I’m hoping to get a good response and I’m looking forward to seeing how the public interact with my work. It’s one of the rare occasions when the club has opened its doors to an outside artist, so I feel very privileged.”

With a carefully curated selection of drawings and photographs, ranging from £1,500 to £30,000, the exhibition coincides with the London Art Fair in Islington and will be an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in the work of a highly individual artist. With such a positive response so far from curators and collectors alike, this could well be Michie’s time to shine.
