Gail Fitzgerald’s solo presentation “Brain Freeze” consists of amorphous multicolored masses and gouache watercolors on paper. Fitzgerald's brightly colored rock-like formations are named after vape flavors, with titles like “Mother’s Milk” (2021), “Lava Lick”(2022), and “Blue Lemonade” (2022). Her connotative titles envision Art as a form of ingestion, using an abstract language born outside of solely formal concerns. Fitzgerald’s gouache watercolors on handmade paper live harmoniously with the sculptural wall works; some of the sculptures look like they have jumped off of the colorful marks on paper, and clung to the walls as three-dimensional shapes. The only off the wall work titled “Push Pop” (2022) is a nod to a previous body of work by Fitzgerald where she placed blob-like masses atop music stands. Here, she uses a yellow metal tripod to hold up her polychromatic form.
