?The BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery is the portraiture Oscars. For 34 years it has been the most prestigious prize in the genre.? Mail on Sunday, June 2013The Portrait Award, now in its thirty-fifth year at the National Portrait Gallery and twenty-fifth year of sponsorship by BP, is the most prestigious portrait painting competition in the world. With a first prize of £30,000, and a total prize fund of £61,000, the Award is aimed at encouraging artists to focus upon and develop portraiture in their work.
Open to everyone over 18
The competition is open to everyone aged 18 and over from around the world in recognition of the outstanding and innovative work currently being produced by artists of all ages working in portraiture.
Last year 1,969 artists from 78 different counties submitted their work and the exhibition, which featured fifty-five paintings, was seen by over 285,000 people at the National Portrait Gallery.
The BP Portrait Award 2014 exhibition will run at the Gallery from 26 June to 21 September 2014.
