Birmingham Big Art Project is the most ambitious public art commission in Birmingham’s long history.
About
This exhibition presents the five shortlisted artists’ proposals commissioned by Birmingham Big Art Foundation to imagine a major new work of public art for the city of Birmingham to be completed in 2018.
We believe that art is a vital part of our city’s past, present and future and our aim is to commission a new public artwork that can support and expand the idea of a twenty first century city.
The five artists have been invited to develop new myths and to propose an artwork that could perform an iconic function within Birmingham. We want an artist to engage with the many layers of Birmingham, translating them into objects, scenarios or events that can produce new histories and possible futures.
We believe that Birmingham needs to invest in permanent public art and we are confident that Birmingham Big Art Project has five proposals that can animate our city in unexpected and memorable ways.
In January 2017 we will choose the winning proposal with the help of our selection panel of Birmingham people and art experts who will be influenced by this public vote.
