Explore the intersections between writing and drawing with performance and live practices.

This installation is a unique opportunity to enter into the pages and scrawls of 25 artist's private notebooks and sketchbooks. The artist's notebook is a world of ideas, where scribbling down thoughts, drawings and sketches forms an essential facet of the performance process. Before Performance brings together the work of these performance and live artists in order to allow participants to explore these writings, drawings and sketches. Each notebook or sketchbook will be placed upon a series of shelves, enabling participants to read and work through this varied collection. This installation seeks to open up the processes of performance and live art, interactively exploring the notebooks and sketchbooks of performance artists asking; how might performance think and what are these processes of thought? The work featured is displayed in various and diverse forms; from original notepads to large A3 sketchbooks, rebound photocopied sketches and notes to moleskines, handmade notebooks of recycled paper and ring-binders. These various forms of the notebook or sketchbook exist on the cusp of performance; presenting themselves to you as ‘Before Performance', with the hope of challenging what that ‘before' of performance might be. Featuring work from; K.Yoland, Jess Allen, Julie Brixey-Williams and Libby Worth, Carrie Mueller, Roberta Orlando, Lowri Evans, Meggy Rustamova, Christiana Kazakou. Maija Hirvanen, Pedro Matias, Anne Bean, Nina Feldman, Claire Blundell Jones, Alys Longley, Mole Wetherell, Michael Pinchbeck, Nicola Smith, Christopher Matthews, Carran Waterfield, Lucy Algar, Tara Irani, Dagmar Glausnitzer, Nathan Walker, Xristina Penna, Nathalie Bikoro
