Barbara Steinberg is a painter's painter. She firmly believes that the act of painting in oils is still as relevant to us in 2012 as it was in the Golden Age of the Renaissance five hundred years ago. We at Signal Gallery have to agree with Barbara and as one of the first artists to have shown with us when opened five years ago, we have held firmly to this belief. Consequently we are delighted to be showing Barbara's work again.
Barbara's abstract canvases are all about colour and form. Her creative approach needs to balance an acute awareness of technique, with a need to be spontaneous and not constricted by any rules. When she gets the balance right between head and heart, her work can be justly called magical.
The new show is called âAncient Land'. The title indicates for the artist a place that exists beyond the details of the present and the labyrinth of the past. We see it only in our imagination and dreams. In this mystical land, we can find the âtruth' that so often eludes us. Steinberg's works can be seen as portals into this colourful ecstatic world.
Barbara was brought up and studied in her native USA. After coming to London to work with the sculptor Michael Ayrton, she met her husband and settled in the UK, where she has remained ever since. Her work has been seen across the UK, with a notable solo show in Edinburgh. This will be her second solo show at Signal Gallery.
