About

Ground Floor Junction (GFJ) presents a selection of sculptures and digital works of art by the LA-based artist duo Attic Portrait. GFJ is DTLA’s new immersive interactive gallery space and retail experience at One Santa Fe in the Arts District.

Attic Portrait is Sea Zeda and Michelle Lea Tift.

In response to their concerns regarding personal overconsumption versus creation and the desire to build an open community, they developed an art practice. Their new digital performance, ‘We do not dream of labor,’ airs on the side of Surrealism and centers on concepts related to disembodiment, commodification, and the femme experience in modern America. The accompanying sparingly hued soft sculpture works range from referential to pure abstraction and exist in the tension between. Textiles function as the medium and the conveyer of the power of the artists’ inner lives. They pinch, bind, project, and expose themselves to honor an integrated life. The work is an exercise in empathy for the viewer as much as it is for the artists.

“We learn that pieces of ourselves are unattractive; that the full spectrum of the human emotional and physical experience is not beautiful and must be hidden. This is us no longer subscribing to a life of merely existing. We are here to celebrate ourselves fully, live out loud, and thrive. (AP)”

Through their work, Attic Portrait embraces these aspects of themselves with pride over shame, resulting in radical vulnerability.

Michelle Lea Tift and Sea Zeda joined forces as Attic Portrait in 2021. They met through their current positions in Los Angeles’ luxury furniture and interiors industry. Michelle arrived here through a background in New York and LA art galleries and Sea as a designer in luxury apparel on Manhattan’s runways. The duo's understanding of spaces, textiles, and art history is evident in their body of work.
