Paul Coldwell will take a broad view of printmaking and discuss the many reasons why artists are drawn to the multiple image.

The talk will start at 6pm, Gallery open to ticket holders 5pm - 7.30pm

About the Artist:

Paul Coldwell is an artist and Professor in Fine Art Printmaking at Camberwell Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts, University of the Arts London. He has exhibited and lectured widely and his work is held in numerous public collections including MoMA (New York), British Museum, Tate Gallery, V&A, Arts Council of England and the Museum of Art and History, Geneva.

His book Printmaking: A Contemporary Perspective was published by Black Dog in 2010.

His work is included in the exhibition The Printed Line for which he also provided the commentary for the accompanying film.

About the exhibition:

The prints in this exhibition are from the Arts Council Collection, which is the largest loan collection of modern and contemporary British art and includes fine examples of work by all of this country’s most prominent artists.

The Printed Line exhibition considers how artists have used a variety of printmaking techniques to exploit the potential of the printed line from the thick velvety line of drypoint and the heavy cross-hatching of etching to delicate wood engraving and boldly coloured screenpints and lithographs.

Spanning the 20th century and up to the present day, the exhibition will include prints by David Hockney, Lucian Freud, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso as well as Bridget Riley and Rachel Whiteread, alongside a selection of prints from Rugby Art Gallery and Museum's collection.
