Join us for a weekend of workshops exploring light, sound, projections and animation. Led by TMS' Art & Technology artists-in-residence; Dr Edward Kelly, Benny Bowls and Balint Bolygo.

About

Artists-in-residence on the Art and Technology Residency will be running a series of workshops from Blender basics and sound mixing, to projection mapping and playing with light.

Tickets are £25 for one day or £40 for the entire weekend.

SATURDAY

10am - 12.30pm / Record, Edit, Repeat with Dr Edward Kelly

An introduction to recording, editing and mixing techniques. In this session you will learn about recording foley sound effects, and generally capturing sound which you will then edit together into a short piece of sound art. All the software we will use is free. You will need to bring a laptop (anything, but not: a Chromebook or internet-only device) and some headphones. Also bring along an object you think makes an interesting sound. We’ll have microphones, mixing equipment and speakers, but the main focus will be on you working with digital audio with your own computer.

10am - 4pm / Intro to Blender basics with Benny Bowls

Learn basics of 3d modeling, texturing and animation. We will build an object from our surroundings. We will texture using pictures we take on phones. We will then animate and render out a loop, this loop could be used in projection mapping workshop. Bring laptop with Blender 3.0 if possible.

10am - 6pm / Play with Light with Balint Bolygo

Drop in for a few minutes or spend the whole two days with us to explore and play with lights, creating a light installation.

2pm - 4.30pm / Tones, Drones and Bones with Dr Edward Kelly

Audio processing, effects and synthesis – an introduction to digital signal processing with Audacity and Pure Data. We will look at processing (digital effects) of recorded audio using Audacity, and how they enhance a soundscape. You will learn how to apply echo, reverb, other delay effects and filters. There will also be an opportunity to interact with synthesized tones in Pure Data. All the software we will use is free. You will need to bring a laptop (anything, but not: a Chromebook or internet-only device) and some headphones. A small number of small board computers will be available, and we have a few computers amongst us we are willing to let participants use, although you will probably want to use your own machine if you have it.

SUNDAY

10am to 4pm / Intro to projection and LED control using Madmapper with Benny Bowls

Mapping objects with generated content/custom animation made in Blender. Controlling LED’s and appliences with animation.

Bring (optional):

— Laptop with HDMI or adapter input.

— USB stick

— Midi controllers

— Animation or film you want to projection map.
