Art vs Religion

About

For centuries there has been an intriguing, if quite varied, relationship between art and religion. During the Renaissance, the Church sponsored many artists to help spread their message; however, there were strict penalties for artists whose works were incongruous the Church's ethos. Now in an age that is increasingly secular, what is the relationship between art and religion? Artists for centuries have been considered the great creators. Is it possible for them to still have a close relationship with religion and maintain their artistic integrity? On Wednesday 18th March at 7:30pm at Holster Projects, artist David Birkin will be in conversation with Reverend Kevin Scully to discuss these issues. Birkin's work has been exhibited throughout Europe and Russia and Untitled from his Confessions series as well as his installation Word, Thought and Deed are currently featured in Holster Projects' Gods and Rituals exhibition.
