Art, Memory and Place explores ways of preserving and reimagining creative spaces and communities.

About

Join Art360 Foundation on Wednesday 14 September from 2-4pm for our first seminar on Art, Memory and Place in person at Turner Contemporary, Margate, including speakers:

Matthew de Pulford and Katie Hare on the legacy of artist, Lizzy Rose

Studio Sam Causer, Conservation Architect

Benjamin Sebastian, Co-Director of Performance S P A C E

The seminar poses the question:

how does art allow us to think about memory and place?

We are asking audience members to bring an envelope containing their own response to this question. This could be a written or visual response, or an object or piece of ephemera that they are happy to share with others.

Speakers will explore art through the lens of place and environment, contextualising the memory of artists and communities amidst changing landscapes and townscapes. One of the seminar’s aims is that it will lead to the creation of a new British Art Network focused on curating and researching the memories and histories of artist-led spaces. We hope to convene people and perspectives that can help reimagine the future of ‘place’, raising questions including:

  • What and who ‘makes’ a place?
  • If a place ceases to exist what’s lost? What can be kept?
  • How can places be preserved, shared and continue living?

For this particular event, we are focusing on the South East of England. The event will take place in-person in the Foyle Rooms at Turner Contemporary and a recording with closed captions will be made available online. Turner Contemporary is wheelchair accessible, with step free access and a lift serving both floors.

The seminar is organised by Art360 Foundation and supported by the British Art Network (BAN). BAN is a Subject Specialist Network supported by Tate and the Paul Mellon Centre, with additional public funding provided by Arts Council England.

Art360 Foundation is an independent charity helping artists create archives. We support the work of archivists, curators and memory workers through the Expanded Archives Network, collaborative projects and bursary programmes. Find out more here.
