For our fourth Free Exchange On Tour event, Pavel Büchler and Sophy Newton discuss what history means to them and compare experiences from their fields of practice and research.
About
Pavel Büchler is a Czech-born artist and researcher. An influential teacher and multi-disciplinary artist whose work frequently features obsolete technologies, text and found objects. Pavel is also interested in the critical theory of photography, which challenges our reading of photographic images as neutral documents of reality. His most recent exhibitions include The National Gallery, Prague; Sprengel Museum, Hanover; K21, Dusseldorf; Kunsthalle Bremen; IKON Gallery, Birmingham; CCA, Glasgow; Broad Art Museum, Michigan; Power Plant, Toronto; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver.
Sophy Newton is Hon. Heritage Manager of the Cotesbach Educational Trust. With the help of a team of volunteers, she set up the archive there, which comprises over 6,000 documents relating to local and family history. The collection helped drive fundraising for the CET building restoration, an educational charity nested within Cotesbach Estate, with the vision of: ‘Reconnecting with place and land to develop skills for the future’. Sophy’s background in art history and collections management and subsequent involvement in the education system made her approach to archive cataloguing unlike that of a conventionally trained archivist.
