Compare and contrast two great Corporation of London estates: Golden Lane and the Barbican. Led by a professional photographer, you will begin the day immersed in the RIBA’s collections to help contextualise the afternoon walk. Heading offsite, you will then explore both estates.

About

Join us for this architecture photo walk that compares two great Corporation of London estates - Golden Lane and the Barbican. Designed by architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, these estates provided much needed housing in City of London locations that had been heavily bomb damaged during the war. Both connect to a Corbusian lineage of modernist architecture and, now listed, continue to be well-maintained exemplars from a period of utopian ideals for city living.

You will begin the day at RIBA’s HQ in London. Here we will contextualise the afternoon session as you will have the opportunity to look at some of the important reference points within the RIBA Library Collections. Items will include period photographs made at the completion of both estates as well as more recent books and journals that revisit and review the schemes.

Next, as a group, we head offsite to the Barbican for a guided tour around both the estates where you will be challenged to capture images of these two iconic locations. Led by a professional photographer who is familiar with the estates, you will firstly focus on translating the mornings session through reading the urban fabric and then looking at the architectural details. The day will finish with a discussion and review of images.
