ONE BAR, TWO SPECIAL GUESTS, ENDLESS IDEAS; LIGHTHOUSE PRESENTS PROGRESS BAR, OUR MONTHLY NIGHT OF CONVERSATION, PROVOCATION AND INSPIRATION.

About

From vanguard filmmakers and musicians to trending artists and activists, the Progress Bar is an ear-to-the-ground evening to discover new art, hear new music, and make new friends.

For the second Progress Bar in this season, we’ll be joined byElijah, co-founder of influential grime label Butterz, and by producer and musician Gazelle Twin, whose second album,UNFLESH was The Quietus’ album of the year, 2014.

The night will be a look into the practice of two contemporaries, a talk about the health of the music industry and the opportunities the web brings, and the question how a publicly funded arts organisation like Lighthouse could support emerging musicians and fledgling scenes.

Elijah and Gazelle Twin will talk about their work in music. Elijah has recently launched an in-depth interview series on Soundcloud titled ‘Rhythm & Cash’, in which he talks with fellow artists, DJs and producers about their music and careers. Gazelle Twin will look back on the overwhelming international acclaim of her 2014 album ‘Unflesh’. According to the Quietus, “her album is a powerful, violent exploration of the teenage anxieties of electronic musician Elizabeth Bernholz .”

Each Progress Bar presents an up-and-coming DJ/producer from Brighton for musical support. The bar opens at 6.30, and the evening will be hosted by Lighthouse artistic director Juha van ’t Zelfde.

He founded the Butterz record label which is one of the premier brands in the grime scene and is also behind the club night of the same name which holds a residency at Fabric nightclub in London. Butterz was founded in 2010, and they have been at the forefront of the grime scene since that time, releasing music by the likes of Terror DanjahD.O.KRoyal TSwindleChampionP Money and Trim, alongside hosting a regular show on Rinse FM. Elijah has written for The Guardian, Vice, Red Bull, Wired and more, and has recently begun using Soundcloud as a platform for long-form interviews with key players in the scene. His new podcast on Soundcloud ‘Rhythm & Cash’ now provides a platform for in-depth conversations with artists, discussing topics like money, culture and technology.

Gazelle Twin
Gazelle Twin is the creation of Elizabeth Bernholz whose performance personas and conceptual music have acquired international acclaim since her debut album in July 2011. Gazelle Twin is a character used on her last album to embody a teenage version of herself, describing the battle between her body and her mind and “…to throw off everything that spited me”, to widespread critical acclaim. Her latest album UNFLESH (Anti-Ghost Moon Ray, September 2014) – a distinctly visual and challenging work of “horror-pop” exploring themes such as puberty and phobia, was chosen by The Quietus as their Album of The Year 2014. She works with pedals, electronics, and her voice to create powerfully honest, claustrophobic compositions and is currently in the middle of a world tour.
