‘Amygdala’ presents the work of Jenny McIlhatton, textile artist, and Gordon Stabbins, photographer. As both artists and friends they inspire each other and as such were naturally led to a collaboration.
About
For Jenny, Gordon's work “has an honesty. It is full of personality and storytelling, a world away from the highly retouched images I am used to seeing working in fashion."
For Gordon, Jenny has been "a constant source of inspiration and support. Her works are imbued with a brave beauty and an entirely unique voice which seeks to empower, and inspire that same courage in others. It is amazing to see the development of an artist up close as a friend and a privilege to have the opportunity to show work together.”
Jenny's work chronicles 2 years in the fight for reproductive rights, in the Republic of Ireland and her home Northern Ireland. A self-taught artist, Jenny uses textile methods traditionally seen as 'women's work' to deal with contemporary issues of inequality. Of their collaboration, she says that “working directly on Gordon's photographic image on silk was a new adventure for me."
Gordon's lyrical nudes mark a departure into a new subject matter for the photographer. However, the essence of the process remains the same. Simply put, for Gordon, photography is about "the joy of seeing and of discovery". By using alternative and traditional methods to print on silk and paper, Gordon has created a synergy with Jenny's textile work.
