Fitting a modern interpretation to Shakespeare's timeless line, this exhibition reveals the show put on by politicians, film stars, heroes and clowns alike: all of whom are players in the media circus. All the World's a Stage explores the ways in which image has been projected, manipulated and distributed over time, and for what purposes. Visitors will see images of Amy Winehouse, Charles Grey, Napoleon and others represented in different lights, caught in poses of power or moments of quiet vulnerability. The exhibition also reflects techniques of mass-production and mass-circulation of image, and the role of the public in creating and forgetting our celebrities. Addressing themes of mass media, politics and show business, the exhibition inspires contemplation of how image can be controlled, and used as a means of control. Visitors will gain new perspectives on well-known faces and local characters from times gone by. Bringing together both historic and contemporary works spanning several centuries, All The World's A Stage will feature paintings, prints and sculptures handpicked from the vast stores of the Laing and Hatton galleries, as well as one new commission by an emerging local artist. Some of the artworks have never been seen, providing a rare opportunity to encounter hidden treasures of the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums collections in an interesting new light. There will be a programme of educational activities, workshops and talks for all ages to accompany the show.
