Adam Grüning works with installation, photography and video to explore the relationship between authentic and inauthentic experience and notions of value and spectacle.

About

His still-life photographs refer to idealised home and office interiors and the stock imagery he encounters in his design day job.

Grüning is interested in modes of display and the often incongruous way in which objects are paired in commercial imagery to suggest particular narratives and lifestyles. His works re-appropriate and subvert such images, highlighting the gap between digital adn real life environments.

Adam will use his residency to produce new photographs and an artist book, taking the format, style and illustrations of The Studio Year Book as a starting point. This annual illustrated magazine of decorative art was printed  from 1893-1964, before being absorbed into Studio International. Illustrations of modern interiors dating to the late 1950s and early ‘60s from books housed in the Gallery’s Art Library will provide a focus, along with catalogues containing aspirational lifestyle imagery.
