A Tally of Distempered Parts

Woolner Tom and Sebastian Thomas are working together for the first time on this collaborative installation at ASC Gallery. With readily available industrial materials, they will build a series of structures within the gallery space to play host to their respective works. These approximated bodily panels will allow works to be stretched and extruded from the gallery walls and ceiling through various apertures, while also subsuming other elements embedded in their membrane.

They will test the relationship between their practices drawing parallels between the sculptural and bodily processes of digestion, extrusion and excretion A Tally of Distempered Parts

. A cast of disparate organs and limbs will be set adrift within this corporeal terrain.

Sebastian Thomas (b.1986 Reading, UK) works across sculpture, installation, painting, printmaking and film, fundamental to which are the processes of collage and assemblage. He graduated from Camberwell College of Art in 2017. Materially his practice manifests itself through the appropriation of discarded objects and industrial materials alongside processes of ceramics, metal and wood working and casting. Recent work has been concerned with the relationship between fiction consumed by the mind and the corporeal landscape and how it can be a breeding ground for semi-fictional objects, places and protagonists.

In 2021 Thomas was a recipient of the Arts Council’s Develop Your Creative Practice Award which saw him undertake various residencies across Scotland including Cove Park, Scottish Sculpture Workshop and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop.

Tom Woolner (b.1979, London) is an artist who lives and works in London. He graduated in Sculpture from The Royal College of Art in 2003.

Having previously made large scale installations and collaborative performances for particular contexts, his recent work has focused more on a studio-based practice of experimental drawing techniques. These sculptural, yet stubbornly and resolutely flat, wall-based works are made through an intuitive and playful process of pouring and piping, as semi-viscous liquids slowly or rapidly congeal to agree upon a form. The work seems to sit somewhere between object, painting and fresco, as the image is embedded into, rather than onto, the surface. Loosely bracketed under the title Internal Weather, they open portals into the body to reveal an alternative landscape and corporeal meteorology.
