Matias Serra Delmar presents a bold and vibrant series of paintings informed by his observations of light in the Herefordshire countryside. His abstract works invite the viewer to contemplate what is seen through light, both natural and artificial.
Matias is interested in the effects light has on a landscape; the temporal transitory effects of natural light and the glaring impact of LED home and road and street lighting. The colour themes Matias utilises are inspired by the effects of both on the worked landscape of Herefordshire, and his paintings talk of the relationship we have with the modern landscape.
His energetic abstract works are amalgams of his experiences of places. Through unveiling layers of light, familiarity is present simultaneously with an unfamiliar of what is yet to be discovered. He creates scenarios and moments that resonate within us- moments created by fleeting light.
Our eyes sit on a familiarity, enabling the unrecognizable to flourish and play.
In exploring this theme Matias continues the traditional practice of landscape painting but places it firmly in a contemporary abstract context.
Matias Serra Delmar is an early career artist, who since graduating from Emerson College of Visual Arts and Sculpture in 2014, has been based in Catalonia and Herefordshire. He has exhibited in Spain and the UK.
