Bright Lights Artist Call-Out

People United and Year 10 pupils from Turner Free School are looking for an artist to work with them on a collaborative project exploring the theme of care through a series of creative workshops in January and February 2022.

The groups are keen to learn new skills and be inspired, they are open to all artforms but are particularly interested in the following: Animation – Architecture – Digital Art – Filmmaking – Gaming – Light Art – Minecraft – Photography – Pixel Art – Projection Mapping – Skateboarding.

The resulting artworks need to be visually impactful and weather resistant as the project will be shared at Cheriton Light Festival, a bi-annual visual outdoor event that illuminates the streets of Cheriton organised by Strange Cargo.

Eligibility: We are interested in receiving applications from artists with experience of working collaboratively with young people to co-create high quality artwork(s). Artists need to have or be willing to undertake an enhanced DBS check. People United can support those who require a new certificate. Artists must be able to travel to Turner Free School in Folkestone in January and February 2022 to facilitate workshops with the students, as well as to the Cheriton Light Festival in Cheriton at the end of February 2022. Artists must have £10m Public and Products Liability (PPL) insurance and £5m Professional Indemnity (PI) insurance. This is available with a-n The Artists Information Company for a reasonable membership fee. We expect artists take regular lateral flow tests before visiting the school, including for interviews and to always follow government guidance around COVID-19.

What you get: The team at People United will be available throughout the project for support, guidance, and advice. The lead teacher of Art and Computing at Turner Free School will be present for each workshop and will be the artist’s main point of contact in the school. Strange Cargo, a participatory arts organisation based in Folkestone who organise Cheriton Light Festival, can offer some support to the artist including agreeing venues/location for the artwork(s) to be installed, light festival knowledge, local expertise as well as some production support. Total fee £4,600 To cover all costs including artist fee, materials, production, installation, equipment, travel etc. We anticipate the artists fee to be a minimum of 12 days at £200-250 per day depending on experience. Payment will be made by invoice, 50% at the beginning and 50% on completion of the project.
