DC-based artist Allen-Golder Carpenter's new exhibition delves into regional identity, hip-hop culture, and the Black experience, challenging aesthetic values and historical contexts.

All-new works by DC-based artist Allen-Golder Carpenter explore narratives surrounding regional identity, popular hip-hop culture, and the contemporary Black experience, themes already present in Carpenter's burgeoning practice. Challenging both the aesthetic value and the historical context of materials and imagery, "To Dream of Smoke" invites viewers to consider more deeply the origins—both cultural and practical—of the media, fashion, and products they consume. Utilising regional identity as a tool for psychogeographical analysis, Carpenter's work questions how objects and aesthetics communicate as they transition from highly specific cultural and social spaces into broader mainstream and pop culture lexicons. On view at No Gallery.

Running through 7 April 2024 at NYC’s No Gallery
