Exhibition of newly commissioned sculptural work by Siobhán Hapaska

About

Internationally renowned sculptor Siobhán Hapaska has made three new works during a Production Residency at Glasgow Sculpture Studios (GSS) that will be unveiled in this, her first solo Scottish show, which opens in the main gallery at GSS. Hapaska was born in 1963 in Belfast, Northern Ireland and has lived and worked in London for over 27 years. Hapaska's work explores themes of conflict and resolution, both domestic and political, juxtaposing natural and synthetic materials to create sculptural works united by a thoughtful and coherent analysis of human interaction. Hapaska's work addresses issues of communication, interiority, subjugation versus domination, loneliness and hurt, presenting each serious topic with an element of humour and an underlying hopefulness. Recent group exhibitions include Life? Biomorphic Forms in Sculpture, Kunthaus Graz, Austria (2009) and Micro-narratives: tentation des petits realities, Musee d'Art Moderne de Saint Etienne (2008), along with a solo exhibition of newly commissioned work for Camden Arts Centre, London (2007). Hapaska exhibited in Docmuneta X (1997), represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale (2001), won the Paul Hamlyn Award (2003) and has exhibited widely throughout Europe and internationally. Hapaska is represented by Kerlin Gallery, Dublin and Tanya Bonakdar, New York.
