Tony Spencer works in the mediums of sculpture, sound, installation and (Mokuhanga) Japanese woodblock printmaking, to explore themes of sacred geometry and Jungian alchemy.
About
His relationship with geometry reflects a desire to explore the enjoyment of simplicity, rhythm and harmony. He creates the sculptures from reclaimed wood, which reduces the impact on the environment and reveals interesting marks of a previous functional use in the material. To encourage touch and exploration, Tony contrasts texture and tone with reflection, vibrant colours and sound work with sculptural installations to expand the viewer’s sensory experience and create an emotive response.
For the Your Voice 2 project, Tony will create up to three sound sculptures, using his typical materials. Each sculpture will include a sound piece which is activated by viewers, as they move within a space. The sounds will be taken from oral recordings mixed with located sounds from Old Portsmouth and Gunwharf Quays, captured by young people involved in the project.
Your Voice 2 is realised in collaboration with Motiv8, Hotwalls Studios, Portsmouth City Council Library Archive Service, ArtSpace and Project Caboodle with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.
