Reka Komoli’s innovative and complex photographic project drills down into the collective memory of Hungary. She has travelled through the economically damaged towns of the industrial heartland, recording the architectural and societal palimpsest of the Soviet occupation. Excavating the historical context of the disintegrating buildings, she has uncovered a constellation of human experiences. 

Reka has assembled a photographic exhibition that challenges simplistic readings of post-communist ruin photography. Delving into home life, work life, and holiday life under four decades of Soviet domination, she traces the connections between the ruins that are still standing (but now rapidly disappearing) and the complex and sometimes contradictory life of ‘Homo sovieticus’
