About

A mixture of charcoal drawings and paintings, Jake Grewal’s landscapes show nude figures that blend into the dark, earthy scenery. Influenced by British Neo-Romantic artists, such as Keith Vaughan, some of Grewal’s figures are alone, whilst others show intimate connections with one another. Grewal’s creative process involves working from his own photographs and sketches. He often paints outside, resulting in images illustrating the power of nature.

Grewal has also selected artworks by Neo-Romantic artists to appear alongside his paintings. The selection will include works by Prunella CloughGraham Sutherland, and Keith Vaughan. These artists are all contemporaries of John Craxton, whose works are being exhibited in the major exhibition, John Craxton: A Modern Odyssey (Oct 2023 – Apr 2024). Grewal’s choices will set Craxton’s bleak drawings of wartime Britain and vibrant paintings of post war Europe in a wider context.
