About

This session will focus on the animals that can be spotted in the Cathedral's tapestries:

The brightly coloured Piper Tapestry, the Anglo-German Tapestry by Ursula Benker-Schirmer as well as the current display of John Craxton's Landscape with the Elements that makes up Pallant House Gallery's exhibition, John Craxton: A Modern Odyssey.

John Craxton R.A. (1922-2009) used to sing in a choir at Chichester Cathedral and often stayed in Selsey. As a child he got to travel a lot with his family. These travels inspired him to use lots of colours and bold lines in his art.

We're displaying Craxton's enormous tapestry Landscape with the Elements that was inspired by Crete in Greece, and was made as a memorial to the University of Stirling’s first Principal and Vice Chancellor. When the tapestry was first made, it was one of the biggest and most complicated tapestries in Scotland because of the many different colours used.
