'Towards Monumental Sculpture' // Noel Clueit

About

Bureau is presents Noel Clueit's solo exhibition, 'Towards Monumental Sculpture', featuring a new large-scale, site-specific commission made in response to the space at 3 Hardman Square. The idea of the monument, or connotation inherent within the art historical term ‘monumental sculpture', is one of scale and weight - the sheer density and volume of a sculpture, is considered alongside aspects of form and function. Clueit explores these ideas and his interest in public sculpture, the spaces that might house them, and the changing of context through the siting of an artwork within them. Often large works sited within corporate building entrances serve the function of providing volume to fill space. However, within these semi-public spaces the sculptures feel more akin to a prop or backdrop - an ‘add-on' to the space - designed as such. Clueit addresses this through the scale and placement of his work, producing a site-specific sculpture that performs the function of filling the space of Bureau. This new commission furthers his ongoing interest in public sculptures as ‘props', both in terms of holding a narrative, and in his expression of this work as a ‘model', rather than an ‘art object'. The notion of the model highlights the potential of the work as a study towards a monumental sculpture. It is a mute object, ambiguous and inaccurate, therefore allowing for other possibilities to be explored. It is temporary, perishable and transitory. A new digital animation by Clueit, 'Rehearsals For Semiotic Movements (Mavericks Version)', (2014), is also included in the exhibition and further addresses the changing of context. It explores the way we now work in terms of evolving technologies, and a universal language derived from related ‘instructive' gestures. Recognisable hand movements (in a code-like series of swipes, pinches and taps) are imbued with a fondness. In contrast with the everyday, monotonous tasks being performed, the work exudes playfulness in its seemingly choreographed movements, fingers dancing into a space, gesturing, and then moving out of frame. This piece calls to mind Yvonne Rainer's 'Hand Movie' (1966), and Bruce Nauman's performance 'Dance Or Exercise On The Perimeter Of A Square' (1968), through Clueit's consideration of the choreographed action of hands as poetic movements whilst performing task based actions and repetitions. --------------- Noel Clueit (b. 1984) lives and works in Manchester.
