About

The Robert Sainsbury library, which holds about 20,000 volumes, is one of the foremost libraries in the country for the arts of Africa, the Americas and Oceania, and is open to members of the public. This event gives the public an opportunity to discover some of the library's holdings, within the context of the exhibition Crossroads of Empires. Library staff will display atlases and historical volumes dealing with the European encounter with West Africa, which included a long-lasting search to map the course of the River Niger. Books dealing with the culture history and archaeology of West Africa will also be available. Members of the Crossroads of Empires exhibition team will be on hand to answer questions.
