Fergusson's First World War Work for the Admiralty
About
Scottish Colourist J D Fergusson was not an Official War Artist and described patriotism as 'the most overrated of vices'. However in 1918 he was given permission by the Admiralty to sketch in Portsmouth Docks. The resultant works are unusual for the artist in their subject matter and approach. This talk by Alice Strang, Senior Curator, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, will examine this little known aspect of Fergusson's oeuvre. It will focus on the four Portsmouth paintings, as well as the recent discovery in a private collection of a sketchbook containing drawings made whilst in the docks.
