About
The first UK exhibition dedicated to Emily Carr (1871-1945), a pioneer modernist inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast who became one of Canada's best loved artists. The show traces a dramatic journey from darkness to light; from brooding forest scenes to euphoric sky paintings and light-filled beachscapes.
The exhibition will also reveal Carr encountering and documenting the aboriginal coastal communities of British Columbia, bringing together samplings of her sketchbooks, writings, watercolours and drawings as well as related indigenous artefacts.
The exhibition follows the Gallery's 2011 show on Canada's Group of Seven. Carr's own encounter with the Group, in particular the work and encouragement of Lawren Harris, influenced her practice.
