Dorothea Wight and Marc Balakjian were at the forefront of British printmaking for 40 years, working together at Studio Prints, an editioning workshop founded by Dorothea in 1968. Here they collaborated with many Modern British Artists, including Lucian Freud and Frank Auerbach. The couple were also skilled artists in their own right and masters in the medium of mezzotint, winning many international prizes for their work.
This exhibition acts as a retrospective, exhibiting the couple’s work together for the first time in a public gallery. The accompanying exhibition of prints produced at Studio Prints for other artists on Floor 1 also highlights the importance of the couple to the wider history of British printmaking. Both celebrate the achievements and contribution of Dorothea, who sadly passed away in May 2013
