About

LAYDEEZ DO COMICS is the first UK graphic novel forum led by women. Its focus is on comics work based on life narrative, and the drama of the domestic and the everyday. Launched in July 2009, the group was set up by the illustrator and author of graphic novel Billy, Me & You, Nicola Streeten, and the artist, researcher and curator Sarah Lightman. It is the first women-led graphic novel forum in the UK. They shared an interest in comics and graphic novels that were not about superheroes but were more about the domestic and autobiographical. They felt that they couldn't be alone in their interest for this emerging genre within the medium of graphic novels. They were right! Artists, academics, publishers and fans from around the world are invited to speak. It is a platform for people to test new works and ideas, where emerging artists present their work alongside more established practitioners. All are welcome — men and women, those with no knowledge of comics and those already immersed. Wine and home-baked cakes are served too! This month's speakers are - Gareth Brookes, comics artist. Author of The Black Project, Myriad Editions Ilya comics artist and writer. Author of Room For Love, Self Made Hero Brigitte Mierau artist www.brigitte-mierau.com To find out more about LDC and to hear podcasts and read the blogs of previous meetings, please see our website.
