Yutaka Sone27. Nov - 25. Jan 14 / ended David Zwirner Gallery
Tuesday - Saturday 10am - 6pm. Monday by appointment only
David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Yutaka Sone (b. 1965)
Sone is a Japanese born artist who now lives in L.A. best known for his marble sculptures of miniature landscapes ranging from Hong Kong Island to imagined alpine scenes. He has represented Japan in the Venice Biennale and his work is held in museum collections worldwide including Tate, MoMA, and the Whitney. His last solo show in London was at Parasol Unit in 2007. His practice is multi-disciplined and includes sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, video, and performance. His work revolves around a tension between realism and perfection, always maintaining a very distinct and unconventional characteristic. He originally trained as an architect and an almost obsessive attention to detail and its relationship to a larger whole underpin his practice.
Architectural and natural landscapes occur throughout his work and he often picks his subjects from actual locations— Manhattan, a mountain range, the rainforest, ski resorts —recreating these to scale in paint, marble, and crystal, or using organic materials such as plants and soil.
