ANALOGUE - Photography in an Age of Digital Reproduction

The Jam Factory presents a group exhibition of Contemporary Photographers who use traditional media and techniques in an age of digital photography. Working in response to the rapidly shifting visual culture of image production; to digital platforms of information exchange such as Flickr and Instagram, these photographs showcase a range of techniques including 35mm, Polaroid, Super8 and pin-hole camera, in order to explore the implications of image-making in the 21st century. Steering away from a nostalgic celebration of a diminishing artform, ANALOGUE examines how we approach notions such as the ‘art object' in a digital world, how image manipulation confounds notions of photographic truth and objectivity, and how pastiche and nostalgia operate as powerful visual signifiers, apparent from Lomography to Instagram. Traversing the boundary of photographic disciplines and practises, this group show investigates the assumptions which pervade accelerated image production and consumption, and explores the role of traditional photographic techniques in an age of digital reproduction. Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space, its unique existence at the place where it happens to be.
