The ‘Overlays' workshop gives the opportunity to work with one of the most innovative and inspiring artists working in textiles. The workshop will begin with an initial presentation by Michael. 'Overlays' primary focus is an exploration of layering. Each participant will create a personal 2 dimensional, laminate of imagery, incorporating tensioned layers of cloth, collage, stitch, paint and other mixed media. A wooden frame approximately A3 in size will be provided along with several pieces of cloth, in differing weights and translucency, as a basis for your experimentation. Each participant should bring an object or series of collaged found elements which could be inserted within layers of cloth and suspended within an A3 frame. These could be stones, toys, mechanized parts, books, tools, random, new or old components, anything which might be creatively veiled and covered with fabric. Imagery might be obscured, erased, overlaid, cut, veiled, removed in a variety of physical forms, utilizing techniques such as cut work, appliqué, shadow quilting, darning, mending, gathered, dyed or pieced work. As a point of reference, textiles found within museums collections offer a rich source of fragmentary information, residual visual clues that infer lost content and context.
